UKIP MEP's Opinion 'Worthless' - EU President

EU President Jean-Claude Juncker has labelled a UKIP MEP's opinion "worthless" after the politician heckled him.

Mr Juncker was delivering his inaugural "state of the union" speech to the European Parliament when David Coburn shouted something out.

It was not immediately clear what he said.

The heckle was prompted by Mr Juncker saying: "There is a lack of Europe in this European Union, there is a lack of union in this European Union.

"We have to change that now."

Mr Juncker deviated from his speech to respond, saying: "You can interrupt me from time to time.

"I will not at each time respond to what you are saying because what you are saying is worthless."

This drew applause from other members of the parliament in the French city of Strasbourg.

It was initially reported the rebuke was directed at UKIP leader Nigel Farage, but Mr Farage insisted it was instead directed at Mr Coburn.

Plans to resettle around 160,000 migrants from Italy, Greece and Hungary around Europe dominated Mr Juncker's speech.

He implored member states to accept and fairly distribute a further 120,000 people, building on a proposal to relocate 40,000 unveiled earlier this year.

"This has to be done in a compulsory way ... 160,000 that is the number," Mr Juncker said.

"I hope that this time everyone will be on board. No rhetoric, action is what is needed."

Britain will not be bound by the scheme, while several other European countries have already expressed their opposition.

After his speech had ended, Mr Farage told Mr Juncker he had "simply got this (the EU's policy on migration) wrong".

He said: "As I warned you in April, the EU's common asylum policy sets its terms so wide that to say that anyone who sets a foot on EU soil can stay.

"I said it would lead to a flow of biblical proportions and indeed that is what we're beginning to see."
