A nightclub reveller headed to A&E after breaking her nail on a night out because she wanted medics to glue it back on.

The bizarre case has been revealed by health officials at Poole Hospital and Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Dorset, as part of a new drive to cut down on time wasters.

Amazingly, some of the other questionable cases are equally astounding – including one patient who attended A&E because they ‘couldn’t get a good night’s sleep.’

Other reasons for a trip to A&E were still ill advised but perhaps a little more understandable – including paper cuts, sore throats, cold sores and mild sunburn.

Recent figures revealed that a single visit to A&E costs a minimum of £59 – meaning that unnecessary trips can cause a huge bill for the taxpayer each year.

Richard Renaut, the chief operating officer at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, said: ‘While we will always do our best for everyone who comes, time spent treating minor ailments reduces the time we have to treat seriously unwell patients who come through our doors.’

Geoffrey Walker, matron for emergency care at Poole Hospital, added: ‘A&E departments are for serious illness or injury and it’s important to stress that the vast majority of patients do access the service appropriately.

‘For those that don’t need A&E there are many alternatives.’

Take heed, people.
