Nintendo confirms it's no longer making Wii U consoles

From Digital Spy

Nintendo is no longer making Wii U consoles.

The gaming giant confirmed that no new units of the Wii successor will be produced, as they prepare to launch their new home console - the Nintendo Switch - in March.

"Wii U production has ended globally," a Nintendo spokesperson told GameSpot.

Although the Wii U hasn't been as successful as the Wii, it has produced several quality games over the years.

Super Mario Maker, Super Mario 3D World, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon are just some of the critically-acclaimed titles released on the system.

And, of course, for anyone who doesn't want to get a Switch right away, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will launch on the Wii U at the same time worldwide.

The Wii U has sold 13.56 million units in total, up to December 31, 2016.

The Switch will launch on March 3 for £279.99 in the UK and $299.99 in the US. The company has said that it is preparing enough stock to avoid a shortage like last year's NES Classic.

But it will not support Wii or Wii U games, and won't have Netflix on launch.
