The Nintendo Switch 2 may launch in early 2025, new reports claim.

The hugely-anticipated follow-up to the Mario maker's hybrid system (which may not be called Switch 2) was originally tipped to launch in time for the lucrative 2024 holiday period.

However, multiple outlets such as Bloomberg, VGC, and Eurogamer, and Brazilian outlet O X do Controle, have all claimed via their own sources that Nintendo has sent out an internal briefing and informed third parties about the delay.

Part of the decision to push back from the holiday period to the first few months of 2025 is rumoured to be about providing a stronger launch line-up, whilst still being released within the same fiscal year.

Nintendo has not publicly commented on the rumours.

A holiday release doesn't necessarily equate to success. The Wii U launched in November and December of 2012, and was a sales disappointment. The Switch was announced in October 2016 and released in March 2017, and currently sits as the third best-selling gaming system of all time.

Following up on the Switch's success isn't all Nintendo has planned for the future. The company also intends to follow up on the success of The Super Mario Bros Movie with a live-action The Legend of Zelda film.

Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto said: "I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films.

"I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it."
