No Fresh Chelsea Bid Made For Stones

Jose Mourinho says he has not made a second bid for John Stones and is happy to start the new season with his current Chelsea squad.

Everton this month rejected the Premier League champions' initial £20m offer for Stones, and Roberto Martinez criticised Mourinho for making his interest public.

Sky sources have indicated Chelsea are prepared to up their bid for Stones, and England teammate Gary Cahill has made it clear the centre-half would be welcome at Stamford Bridge.

But Mourinho, who this week risked angering Everton by describing them as a "smaller club", said after his side's friendly defeat against New York Red Bulls there was nothing new to report.

And he added: "You are speaking with the manager of the best team in England. We are a top team, we have top players. We don't need other players, we trust these players."

One obvious hole in Mourinho's squad is at left-back, with Filipe Luis' imminent return to Atletico Madrid leaving Cesar Azpilicueta as the only recognised specialist.

The Luis deal is done, according to Mourinho, who said: "We sold Filipe. We have the best left-back in England - Azpilicueta."
