'No wonder the council is broke!' Outrage at council boss wages topping £160k - but do YOU think they get paid too much?

Yorkshire folk have hit out after the salaries of the highest earners at Kirklees Council were revealed this week.

The local authority published its Pay Policy Statement for 2024/25 which showed that the council chief executive, Steve Mawson, has an annual salary of £166,866.

It showed that up to 20 officers were entitled to a wage of £100k or more and 15 other members of staff were in the £95,000 to £111,999 pay bracket.

The report explains that Mr Mawson’s salary is 5.8 times greater than the median salary across council staff (excluding schools or other external organisations) which stands at £28,770.

When we shared the story to Yorkshire Live's Facebook page people had a lot to say on the matter.

Phil Restall said: "How do these people think they deserve that sort of money, presiding over a failing council, that can't even deliver basic services."

Sally Wade wrote: "No wonder the council is broke! They don’t do anything to warrant that kind of money they should be ashamed of themselves."

And Meg Bainbridge added: "That is obscene."
