Nocturnal hikers are said to be making life a misery for people living in an Eryri village. The number of walkers heading to Llanberis, with the aim of reaching the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) before sunrise, is on the rise.

Footage obtained by BBC Wales shows more than 100 individuals descending Victoria Terrace in Llanberis, Gwynedd, after midnight, equipped with bright lights and engaging in loud conversation. Cyngor Gwynedd and the Eryri National Park Authority are collaborating to address the issue.

Previously, daytime disturbances such as parking problems, littering, and inappropriate use of private gardens have been reported. However, the community is now facing increased anti-social behaviour at night, a trend that has escalated post-Covid, reports Wales Online.

Speaking to BBC Wales, local resident Christine Patton said: "I'm really happy for people to go up [the mountain], but just be a bit quiet and respectful. Have a good time but don't forget there's people who actually live here."

There are calls for wardens to help manage the situation. A spokesperson for the national park authority said: "We are aware of the issues raised and recognise the impact and inconvenience they can have on the local community.

"Unfortunately we have observed an increase in anti-social behaviour since the Covid outbreak and it is disheartening to see some users are still not respecting the residents and local communities in Eryri [Snowdonia]."

The council said: "We remind people planning to visit popular attractions and any organisation or charity organising an event to be mindful of local communities and to plan ahead. This includes not disturbing local people, especially late at night, checking the parking arrangements before visiting any location, disposing of their litter and controlling their dogs and cleaning up their mess."
