North East hour-by-hour weather forecast as Met Office predicts wet and thundery weekend

The North East is set for a wet weekend with little sign of summer sunshine over the next two days in the latest Met Office forecast.

A Yellow weather warning has been issued for potentially disruptive thunderstorms in every area of the region from 11am until 10pm on Saturday (June 15). Forecasters said that "slow moving" thunderstorms and heavy showers throughout the day may lead to some disruption to travel and outdoor activities, with people advised to amend their plans accordingly.

Following a cloudy start to Saturday, showers are expected to become more widespread in the region throughout the day and turn heavy and thundery at times, with longer spells of rain in the afternoon when the warning is in place - the Met Office has said that the heaviest showers and thunderstorms could produce as much as 20mm of rain in less than an hour. It will also feel cool for this time of year, forecasters predict, with highs of 15°C.

Sunday (June 16) will get off to a dry start, the Met Office said, but will soon follow in Saturday's footsteps with showers developing that will merge into spells of heavy and potentially thundery rain. It will feel slightly warmer, however, with temperatures hitting highs of 18°C.

Looking ahead to the start of next week, Monday is forecast to see a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, which could again be heavy and thundery at times. Thankfully, Tuesday and Wednesday are looking generally dry, with the odd isolated shower and temperatures climbing close to average.

The summer solstice also approaches, with the longest day of the year falling this coming week on Thursday, June 20, marking the official start of astronomical summer. On Thursday, the sun will rise at 4.28am and set at 9.49pm, with more than 17 hours of daylight to look forward to.

Of course, one of the North East's most highly anticipated summer attractions also arrives in less than a week: The Hoppings. Organisers of the beloved funfair have already confirmed that this year's event will be "slightly smaller" than normal due to weather damage on the Town Moor, but promised that there will still be plenty more for visitors to look forward to.
