North Korean defector given free lifetime supply of Asian version of Wagon Wheels

A soldier who defected from North Korea has been given a free lifetime supply of a chocolate treat.

Oh Chung-sung defected to South Korea in November, when he said he has a penchant for Choco Pies.

The chocolate and marshmallow treat is very popular in South Korea, so much so that the North tried to copy them with its own brand.

The snack cake is similar in texture and taste to Wagon Wheels.

However, in order to secure his lifetime supply of free chocolate, Oh must remain in South Korea.

Snack company Orion, which makes Choco Pie, made the announcement this week.

It has sent the soldier 100 boxes of Choco Pies to his room at Anjou University Hospital, where he is currently being treated.

Doctors discovered that Oh’s body was riddled with parasitic worms, some as long as 27cm.

He was also hit by five bullets when he sprinted across the heavily guarded border in broad daylight from the North into South Korea.

After he first woke up in hospital, Oh said he would like some Choco Pies.

The hospital said he will not be allowed to eat the snacks until he has recovered fully.

However, the Choco Pies have been put in his hospital room.

An spokesman for Orion said: ‘We sent the Choco Pies as a welcoming present to Oh, who came to Korea after going through hardship.

‘It was not an act for publicity.’
