Northumberland County Show to return on second May Bank Holiday

The Northumberland County Show is set to return next month with a range of new acts to impress the crowds in its arena.

The Northumberland County Show attracts up to 30,000 people to the showground at Bywell, near Stocksfield, and organisers and visitors alike will be hoping for good weather for the third year on the trot. As usual, there will be around 300 trade stands selling everything from food to tractors.

Last year's first ever 'Game Fair' makes its return after proving popular with visitors, who enjoyed giving their dogs a run in the gun dog scurry, watching birds of prey and gun dog demonstration, and enjoying game-themed catering. Alongside the classics such as the crowning of the Champion of Champions and the Grand Parade, there are a host of new events and attractions at the show.

The Main Arena act is Jonathon Marshall's Free Spirit show, which will see professional falconer and horse trainer Jonathon riding equine TV star Amadeus, the black stallion from Games of Thrones and the Lloyds adverts; while a falcon flies through the horse's legs at speeds of up to 100mph.

The Knights of Chivalry will also appear in the arena to take the show back to the 13th century with armed combat tournaments between rival knights, stunts, and costumes. Alpaca section organisers, Rachel and Paul Vaclik have set up a display pen of llamas for the first time, after being constantly asked: "Are these animals llamas?"

Rachel said: "In response to this question, we have invited a display pen of llamas for the first time. It should be a draw for visitors who can get up close to these gentle creatures and learn all about them and compare them to the alpacas!"

The Taste of the North food marquee is back with artisan food produce, street food from around the world and local delicacies; while there is a selection of live music and activities for children throughout the day.

Organiser Kerry Robson said: "The Show fundamentally is a traditional agricultural event, and the heart of what we do. Our aim is to enable everyone to learn about, and celebrate, the excellent farming practices and livestock husbandry in our county and bring the rural and urban communities together.

"We want everyone to have the best possible experience of the Show, and to encourage new visitors, we also offer a wide range of attractions, displays and entertainment throughout the day so the whole family have fun."

The Northumberland County Show takes place on Saturday, May 25 2024 at Bywell, near Stocksfield. Tickets are now on sale at the Northumberland County Show website.
