Shoppers are being warned not to eat a string of sandwiches, wraps and baguettes over fears it could cause illness. Bread Spread is recalling all of its chilled and ready to eat foods.

Concerns have been raised that products could contain Listeria monocytogenes which can cause flu-like symptoms. This includes fever, muscle pains, nausea and diarrhoea.

In rare cases, an infection called Listeriosis can develop which could lead to more serious complications such as meningitis. Products are sold under a number of brand names - Bread Spread, Orbital and Perfect Bite.

All pack sizes and products with a use by date of up to May 18 this year are affected. The Food Standards Agency said: "Bread Spread is recalling various chilled and ready to eat foods because Listeria monocytogenes has been found in some of the products.

"Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

"Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems. If you have bought the above products do not eat them. Instead, return the products to where they were bought for a full refund."

A food recall alert read: "Bread Spread is recalling all chilled and ready to eat foods under the brand names "Bread Spread", "Orbital Foods" and "Perfect Bite" including sandwiches, wraps, baguettes, twists, frenchsticks and torpidos with a range of fillings due to the detection of listeria monocytogenes in final products. All chilled [and] ready to eat foods with a use by date between May 10, 2024, and May 18, 2024 are being recalled.

"The use by date back be found of the product packaging label."
