A notorious beggar has once again been banned from entering a town centre following "aggressive" behaviour.

Bradley Alexander Grimes, 29, has been slapped with a criminal behaviour order preventing him from visiting Middlesbrough town centre. It comes after Cleveland Police received complaints from members of the public about Grimes' aggressive begging.

The order was issued at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Monday, June 17 and any breaches could result in further action. Middlesbrough town centre PC Chris Swales said: “The criminal behaviour order issued on Monday aims to stop Bradley Grimes from becoming verbally abusive and aggressive with members of the public in his attempts to obtain money from them.

“Members of the public should be allowed to go about their business without facing this type of behaviour, and it won’t be tolerated or accepted. Any breaches of the CBO could result in further criminal proceedings.”

The order stipulates that Grimes must comply with the following:

  • Not enter Middlesbrough town centre at any time except to attend pre-arranged legal appointments.

  • Not attempt to obtain or obtain money, beg for money or ask for money or other items from any member of the public.

  • Not sit on the floor or any public footpath outside any commercial premises, licensed premises or food outlet or next to cash machine.

  • Not remain in any shop, commercial or public authority premises if asked to leave by staff.

  • Not be verbally abusive to any member of the public, local authority or staff from a commercial premises.

  • Attend any meeting and appointment arranged for him in regard to his housing, health or addiction needs by his social worker or any other agency.

  • Not enter Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough between the junctions of Borough Road and Granville Road.

Marion Walker, head of neighbourhoods at Middlesbrough Council, said: "We supported Cleveland Police's application with CCTV evidence and statements, and we are happy that this partnership working has led to a significant result.

"Our officers have offered Bradley significant help and support on numerous occasions, but his offending has continued. This meant that pursuing tough action through the courts was the only option to address his behaviour."

Back in January, Teesside Live reported Grimes was put behind bars after he breached a civil injunction on 17 separate occasions in September and October last year. He admitted the offence and was jailed for 96 days.

The defendant has plagued town centre businesses and visitors over several years and is frequently involved in confrontations with Middlesbrough Council neighbourhood safety wardens.

At the time, Teesside Live reported many attempts were made to find Grimes, accommodation, as well as help to stop begging and address substance misuse issues. He was even offered a role as a Big Issue seller - but his licence was revoked the following month for begging while selling the magazine.
