Nottingham bar The Alchemist launches a levitating drink - and you won't believe your eyes
What sorcery is this... a levitating cocktail? Your eyes do not deceive you - it really is floating. It may come as no surprise that this other-worldly drink is from the masters in the dark arts of molecular mixology at The Alchemist.
Not content with blowing our minds with the theatre of the Colour Changing One, that goes from blue to pink, the foaming Bubble Bath and billowing dry ice from the Lightbulb Moment, the creative minds have conjured up something just as clever. Called The Levitating One, it has just gone on sale at the Nottingham bar in King Street.
Bartender Javed Alizada magicked one up so we could see for ourselves. Destined to be a hero serve, the cocktail is a riff on a Manhattan, made with Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Regal Rogue Wild Rose and Bold Red Vermouth, Akashi Plum Sake and aromatic Muyu Vetiver Gris liqueur.
The glass floats above a special base which uses an electromagnet. It's not just a gimmick - it tastes good too. The Levitating One is amongst a number of new cocktails for spring and summer added to The Alchemist menu to inject even more fun into the drinks.
Another is The Egg, while it doesn't float, still offers plenty of intrigue. Made with Hendricks Gin, St Germain, citrus, yuzu and punchy cucumber and served in a ceramic egg, the cocktail has been hidden from view for the past two years, discoverable only by a QR code. It has now made its way onto the menu for everyone to enjoy.
Another quirky tipple is Basil Smash, made with Miller’s gin, basil, peach and lime. Drinkers have to smash a sweet disc, with a basil leave encased, placed on top of the drink. The new cocktails are accompanied by a new food menu with dishes including jalapeño and Parmesan donuts, pulled beef brioche and Korean superfood salad.
