The weekend always has and always will mean fish and chips for dinner for millions of people across the country. A chippy tea is a British staple, a ritual for many of us and the highlight of the week for some - often enjoyed on a Friday or Saturday night.
Nottinghamshire has a number of cracking fish and chip shops, with great options both in Nottingham and the wider county. Whether it is fluffy chips, moist fish in light, crispy batter, or the mushy peas that you simply can't find anywhere else, everyone has their favourite.
Review website, Three Best Rated, has put together a list of the top three fish and chip shops in Nottingham. The site rates the fish and chip shops with a rigorous 50-Point Inspection.

The Cod’s Scallops
The award-winning restaurant, located on Bramcote Lane, Wollaton, sits right at the top of the list. The chain also has sites in West Bridgford and Carrington in Nottinghamshire, Long Eaton, Derbyshire, and Harborne, near Birmingham.
Amongst the inspection report by Three Best Rated, The Cod Scallops boasts a ten out of ten rating for pricing, ratings and online order service. Whilst the variety of the menu and business hours was given a nine out of ten.
The review site said: “The Cod's Scallops prides itself on serving quality, sustainable products and more than 20 species of fish every day. All their food is cooked fresh and healthy alternative. They provide a massive selection of fish and shellfish, which changes daily depending on what comes off the boat.”
The Jolly Fryer
Mention a chippy tea in north Notts and one restaurant often comes to mind - the Jolly Fryer in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, which many customers say is 'the best fish and chips they've ever had'.
This top-rated venue, run by popular owner Theo Tsiolas, is located on Low Moor Road. Established in 1993, Three Best Rated gave the chip shop a ten out of ten for service, experience, pricing and variety of menu. For business hours, a nine out of ten.
The website's review reads: “They serve everything you expect from your local chip shop with plenty of specials offering you & your family great value for money. Jolly Special contains mini fish, chips & a small sausage with either peas, curry, gravy or beans.”
Wollaton Fish Bar
A family-run fish and chips restaurant, located on Russell Drive, Wollaton, completes the top three. Boasting specialities of homemade fish cake, scampi and mini fish, the eatery has been described as ‘reasonably priced’.
Three Best Rated wrote: “All their dishes are cooked freshly by their talented staff. All fish is always cooked spot-on in nice crispy batter. For vegetarians, it's good to note that they only use vegetable oil and all chips and vegan food are cooked separately from meat and fish products. All their Special Meals are served with small chips and a choice of one sauce.”
The venue were given a ten out of ten for variety of menu, reviews accuracy, experience and service, and a nine out of ten for business hours.
