A crowdfunder has been launched to help Nuneaton supporters start the town's football club again from scratch for the first time since 1889. They say they desperately need to raise funds to help meet the off-the-pitch start-up costs for the first season of Nuneaton Town FC.

Formed by supporters and sponsors, the new club replaces the old Nuneaton Borough FC, which collapsed at the end of last year. The new club is a Community Interest Company and part-owned by the supporters via Nuneaton Borough Supporters Co-Operative.

They say they hope to raise £6,000 to help with costs as the new club prepares for its first season in the Midland Football League Division One next month. For the first two seasons, the team will play at The Oval, the home of Bedworth United FC.

But they say, ultimately, they do want to find a permanent home in Nuneaton. In the meantime, the new team under the management of joint first team managers, Darren Acton and Russell Dodd, are preparing for their debut season and the club says they need help.

"Setting up a new club involves lots of off-the-pitch upfront costs: kit, physio equipment, training venue hire, legal fees, hospitality, insurance, FA and League affiliation, and much more," a spokesperson said.

"Without our own ground, we lose out on revenue streams usually generated by home games. Also, as a community-focused club, we want supporters and the wider community to be at the heart of everything we do and play a meaningful role in the club’s development."

Speaking about the target, the spokesperson added: "The club’s business partners have kindly pledged an initial £6,000 to help with the costs of setting up the football club.

"We would like to match this £6,000 figure before the season gets underway by asking for contributions from fans and others in the community who are able to give.

"If we raise more than £6,000, the surplus will go towards the financial reserves needed to protect against income fluctuations during our first season and efforts to find a venue for home games in Nuneaton."
