Olympics: Winter Sports Set For Funding Boost

More Government cash is expected to be put into winter sports after Great Britain's Olympians had their equal best Games in Sochi, winning four medals.

The team has arrived back in the UK after what the head of UK Sport called an "outstanding" Olympics in the Russian city.

It was the best prepared and the best funded team in British winters sports history and their tally beat the target of at least three medals.

The highlight was Lizzy Yarnold's gold in the skeleton event.

As the team posed for pictures at Heathrow Airport, she told Sky's Paul Kelso that winning was a "massive deal".

"Now I've got the gold it's most important to me to tell people that if you have dreams and you pursue that, you could get to the Olympics as well," she said.

The men's and women's curling teams won silver and bronze respectively, and Jenny Jones took bronze in the slopestyle.

Team GB equalled the record tally from France in 1924, as they finished 19th in the medals table..

Government funding for the team is distributed through UK Sport whose boss Liz Nicholl said: "It's been an outstanding Games and the athletes need and deserve the support.

"I can't say what the investment will be from sport-to-sport as we'll discuss that with them over the coming weeks and months.

"But I am anticipating more investment in winter sport."

Mike Hay, Britain's chef de mission in Sochi, said: "They knew what they had to do.

"We talked about the strength in depth of the team and we proved that. I'm disappointed in some ways too because I feel like we've left some medals out there."

There was particular disappointment for Elise Christie who failed to win a medal in the short track speed skating where she was disqualified in all three of her events.
