Musical TV episodes are having a bit of a moment right now, so of course ABC's Once Upon a Time is getting in on the action.

Yes, following in the footsteps of The CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and the upcoming Supergirl and The Flash crossover episode, Once's executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis have confirmed the rumours are true and Storybrooke will be getting a musical makeover for one episode in the upcoming back half of season six.

We're just surprised it's taken them this long.

The news was announced on Thursday (February 2) by Horowitz and Kitsis at ATVFest (via EW), with Horowitz later reiterating the announcement in a tweet, which is how you know it's official.

While the small matters of why the singing comes about, who will be singing and when exactly the episode will air are yet to be revealed, the episode should be in safe hands anyway, as many of the cast members have musical backgrounds – including Jennifer Morrison, Josh Dallas, and Ginnifer Goodwin.

Which naturally means we're expecting a lot more of this:

And although the fairy-tale-themed series often features characters from the Disney vault of inspiration, it looks like the current plan is to feature all-new original songs in the musical episode, meaning we'll be leaving the likes of 'A Whole New World' and 'Under the Sea' to the animated classics.

The series has been toying with the idea of a musical episode for years, with Kitsis addressing the idea head on at Comic-Con in 2015 by saying: "It would be great to do a musical episode, [but] I don't know even know where to begin."

Well, it looks the show has figured it out after all – and if they really are planning to "hit the reset button" for an as-of-yet unannounced season 7 by cutting some of the cast, at least they'll get a proper swan song to bow out on.

Once Upon a Time is back on Sunday, March 5 on ABC in the US. Netflix streams the show in the UK.
