One Born Every Minute midwife Joanne Lumsden had 'affair' with man... then helped deliver his partner's child

A midwife who appeared on the reality TV show One Born Every Minute is under investigation for allegedly having an affair with the partner of a woman whose baby she helped deliver.

Joanne Lumsden, a midwife at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, appeared on the Channel 4 series but allegedly failed to declare a conflict of interest before delivering the child.

The distraught mother, who did not wish to be named, said she had been through “the most horrific ordeal.”

She said she believed Ms Lumsden had “taken matters into her own hands and made sure she was present that day.”

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, she said the memory of the birth of her child had been ruined by the knowledge that it was delivered by a woman who was allegedly having an affair with the baby’s father.

“I am now left with a life-long memory of the midwife holding my newborn baby in her arms with the knowledge that she was having sexual relations with my baby’s father during my pregnancy and being fully aware that I was under the care of her place of work.

“This will haunt me for as long as I live,” she said.

Ms Lumsden is said to have began an affair with the father of the child whilst on holiday in Benidorm. Upon his return, the father began to miss hospital appointments relating to the pregnancy for fear of the affair being uncovered, it was reported. He is also said to have failed to attend the birth of his first child.

The parents of the child are no longer together. The mother said Ms Lumsden caused the "destruction of a family."

Liverpool Women’s Hospital has taken disciplinary action against Ms Lumsden after the mother sent an open letter of complaint to the Women’s Hospital trust.

A spokesman for the hospital said: “Whilst we cannot discuss the detail of individual cases due to patient confidentiality, we can confirm that disciplinary proceedings were undertaken by the Trust as a result of two members of staff’s conduct.

“The Trust took this action immediately upon being made aware of the incident and an internal investigation was also conducted.

“The disciplinary process undertaken with the members of staff involved is now being dealt with by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

The hospital also issued an apology to the mother

In one of Ms Lumsden’s appearances on One Born Every Minute she said: “I get to experience the miracle of childbirth every day, and watch couples become a family.”

The Evening Standard has attempted to reach Ms Lumsden for a comment.
