One killed, nine injured in stabbing rampage in Polish shopping centre

One person has been killed and nine others injured after a man carried out a knife rampage at a shopping centre in southeast Poland.

The alleged attacker, a 27-year-old man, attacked people at the VIVO! mall in Stalowa Wola on Friday.

He was detained by shoppers and handed over to the police when they arrived, regional police spokeswoman Anna Klee told the PAP news agency.

She said: "He was attacking people from behind, hitting them with the knife."

Ms Klee added that a 50-year-old woman who was among those attacked died later in hospital.

Eight people were taken to hospitals in Stalowa Wola, Tarnobrzeg and Sandomierz, most with serious injuries, regional police chief Krzysztof Pobuta said.

He said: "There's no terrorist or ideological context for the attack, it's rather his poor psychological condition."

Five women and four men aged between 18 and 50 were among the victims.

Four of those injured underwent surgery, with two in critical conditions.

A search of the alleged attacker's home revealed medical documents saying he was a psychiatric patient, National Police spokesman Mariusz Ciarka said.
