One Piece director shares thoughts on the Netflix show getting season 2 renewal

One Piece has defied the odds to become a global sensation that is breaking Netflix records, so fans are curious if the live-action series will be renewed by Netflix.

Director Marc Jobst tells Yahoo UK of the likelihood of One Piece getting a season 2, which became the number one ranked show in 84 different countries upon its release.

"I know that they've already been thinking a lot about this, where we go next," he says of the show's writing team and their plans for season 2.

One Piece adapts Eiichiro Oda's iconic manga series of the same name. It follows Monkey D Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and his quest to become King of the Pirates by finding the fabled treasure the One Piece alongside a rag tag group of friends he meets along the way.

It is a story told on an epic scale, the manga spans 106 volumes and counting while its anime adaptation has released 1,074 episodes so far since it began airing in 1999.

With so much to choose from there are several stories that fans of the original are hoping to see come to life on the small screen, but when asked about the potential future of the show and which storyline he'd like to see adapted the most Jobst was coy.

Reflecting on the show's writers, he said: "I would be treading on their territory if I started to say where I think we might go next.

"I just think there are so many different arcs, I wouldn't like to say which one I would like to go next to."

The reason for his tentativeness also stemmed from his concerns about how the show would be received, as we were speaking before it had been released on Netflix.

Jobst, who directs the first two episodes of the live-action series, adds: "I feel like I might be tempting fate.

"I will wait until we come out in two days time before daring to suggest we have a second series."

Alongside Godoy, the live-action series stars Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp and Taz Skylar as Sanji, Luffy's trusty crew members.

Season one ended with the group heading towards the Grand Line in order to find the One Piece, after retrieving a map to the location following a battle with villain Arlong (McKinley Belcher III).

In a teaser of what could come in season two, a mysterious character was seen burning a wanted poster of Luffy using his cigar in the closing moments of the episode.

This person is none other than villain Smoker, who faces Luffy and the Straw Hat crew at Loguetown in the original manga.

One Piece is out on Netflix now.
