The One Show proved to be a bit embarrassing for one of its guests this evening (October 31) after his magic trick appeared to fail.

Director Spyros Melaris joined hosts Alex Jones and Amol Rajan to talk about his career, after pulling off one of the greatest hoaxes in human history back in 1995.

His 17-minute black-and-white movie, Alien Autopsy (not to be confused with Ant and Dec's film of the same name), gripped the planet with its supposed discovery of an extraterrestrial corpse in Roswell, New Mexico. With some extensive research, sculptures' trickery and a lot of balls, the filmmaker fooled everyone.

However, after regaling the hosts and guests with how he masterminded the movie, his One Show appearance was destined to be a red-faced experience.

Handing out a piece of glittering rock – supposedly taken from the genuine crash site in Roswell – to ex-EastEnders star Samantha Womack, he then explained that its 'alien power' would help her in his magic trick.

Spyros placed three envelopes on the table and asked Samantha to sit the rock on whichever one she felt compelled to (controlled by the object's alien power, let's not forget).

It was soon revealed that Samantha hadn't tapped into the 'rock's forces' and plonked it on the wrong envelope. Oops.

"Don't feel bad!" Spyros hurriedly stated, before the hosts swiftly moved on.

As you'd expect though, the unforgivable mistress that is Twitter was quick to pounce on his live-on-air mistake.

The One Show airs Mondays through Fridays at 7pm on BBC One.
