There are many things to look for when searching for a potential romantic partner.

Are they kind? How do they speak to waiters? Do they constantly speak about their ex? Do they like coriander? Do they prefer crunchy or smooth peanut butter? We could go on.

However, a new survey has revealed that there is one thing single people look for in a potential romantic partner – and it has nothing to do with how physically attractive they are.

According to the survey of 2,000 singles, meaningful conversation is the most important trait someone can have.

The survey was carried out by dating website Plenty of Fish and found that 74 per cent of respondents thought conversation was the benchmark for chemistry and compatibility.

Conversation expert Celeste Headlee said in a statement: "This study highlights the fact that singles value authentic connections and conversations.”

The study also found that 58 per cent of singles find bad grammar to be a bigger turn off than bad sex and 60 per cent of people believe you can fall in love during your first conversation. Blimey.

Furthermore, 34 per cent of singles said they would rather have bad sex for the rest of their lives than date a Trump supporter. Extreme? Yes. Understandable? Also, yes.
