One To Watch: Jodie Comer

Jodie Comer. You probably know of her as the mean spirited, jealous, incredibly lost but at times loving friend, Chloe from My Mad Fat Diary, the teenage drama on Channel 4 that mixed mental health with love, loss and ridiculously good 90s tunes.

That’s when she first popped up on my radar anyway. The young actress has been acting since 2008 but her turn as Chloe was not only brilliant but her first serious debut and it was then that I knew that she would be around for a very long time.

The monumental success of last year’s BBC drama Doctor Foster in which Comer played mistress Kate of Dr Foster’s husband Simon, was lauded by critics and was not one to be missed! Seriously. It was so good, BBC One have decided to make a second season!

(this bit was no frickin joke oh my word)

Cut to 2016 and she’s cast in BBC Three’s miniseries ‘Thirteen’. Jodie portrays Ivy Moxam, the young girl who was kidnapped 13 years ago and managed to escape from her basement prison one sunny day. Even though there have only been two episodes so far, Jodie has captured me.

She is not only thoroughly believable but she keeps you on your toes. This is one fantastic actress.

To give a (quick) wider view into Thirteen, Ivy was kidnapped at age 13 and at age 26 has finally escaped. Upon doing so, she calls the police and we are taken through the steps of rehabilitation from the police picking her up to the current episode where she is readjusting to life around her family once again whilst having feelings for D.I Elliot Carne, handling the suspicious D.S Lisa Merchant and remembering life as a carefree teen with Tim.

Jodie is a scene stealer that manages to keep you guessing. Just when you feel a kinship with her story, something is thrown in the mix and it’s confusing all over again. I’ve never been so taken by a show so quickly. I’m waiting on the edge of my seat for episode three and how annoying sad that there are only five episodes.

As there have only been two episodes so far (only three more, heart be still), I have no idea what’s going to happen next but it’s one of those rare times when I’m not running to Wikipedia to read what happens before pressing play (yes, I do that with every movie and TV show I watch. I don’t mind spoilers!).

There is no doubt that after being Ivy Moxam in Thirteen, the only way for Jodie is up.
