Only Murders in the Building boss John Hoffman has revealed that he kept new star Meryl Streep in the dark about the nature of her character during filming.

The screen icon is joining series regulars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez in the murder mystery series for its upcoming third season – though who exactly her character is remains under wraps at present.

However, it turns out that during most of the season's production, the actress herself also wasn't aware of whether her role could be a killer or a victim.

“Thought out the season, we keep the scripts pretty tight, even with our main cast," Hoffman told Deadline. "I loved watching Meryl be attuned to that and come to that in some way throughout Season 3.

"She kept on wondering, ‘Am I going to die? Am I going to be the murderer?’ She had to know what was coming up next, it was funny."

A first look at Streep's role was unveiled in March, with the character seen in a scriptreading roundtable as she declares when forgetting her place: "Oh my god, it’s me! Oh, I’m sorry. It’s me, isn’t it?"

Streep is one of a number of new additions for season 3, alongside Grey's Anatomy's Jesse Williams, Emily in Paris' Ashley Park and Ant-Man's Paul Rudd – the latter of whom plays Ben Glenroy, whose flashforward murder in the season two finale will be central to the new season.

Speaking previously about Rudd's role in the next set of episodes, Hoffman told TVLine: "The hope is that he doesn’t get some huge thing that takes him away [from us], but I’m pretty sure we’re in good shape.

"Our victims play major parts in the season, so we’re really excited to have him be a part of it."

Only Murders in the Building season 3 will premiere on Tuesday, August 8. Seasons 1 and 2 are available now on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the US.
