Onthank Primary teacher awarded probationer of the year

Onthank Primary School teacher Abbie McLelland has been awarded East Ayrshire ’s Probationer of the Year Award.

The P5 teacher was recognised for her enthusiasm for teaching, her contribution to the school and the wider school community.

Miss McLelland received high praise from her P5 pupils who thought she was excellent at teaching PE and maths. One pupil said: “Miss McLelland is so positive, she makes all learning fun.”

In addition to normal teaching duties, she directed a school show and has led a number of other initiatives and extracurricular clubs this year. She is passionate about ensuring that all children receive the best possible experience through her teaching.

Speaking after receiving the award, Abbie said: “It is such an honour to receive the East Ayrshire Probationer of the Year Award.

“This year has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. I have loved my class, every single one of them are superstars, and they have approached learning with great enthusiasm.”

“I would also like to thank my mentor, depute head Mrs Findlay, who has been so supportive and encouraging throughout the year.”

Linda McAulay-Griffiths, chief education officer and head of education said: “I was delighted that Abbie McLelland received Probationer of the Year.

“She was recognised for her teaching skills, her passion and enthusiasm, and is a well-deserved winner from an incredibly strong group of nominees.”

Onthank Primary head teacher Alison Wright said: “Onthank’s school song is Heather Small’s Proud and I can tell you, Miss McLelland has made us all proud.

“She has been a credit to our school with her positive attitude and passion for teaching. On behalf of the whole school, I would like to wish her the very best with her future career.”
