Oops! Driver ends up perched on steps after taking wrong turn following sat nav

It looks like a scene from a film, but this car was spotted stuck on a flight of steps after its elderly driver took a wrong turn after following her sat nav.

The silver Vauxhall Corsa was left perched precariously on the pedestrian steps in Plymouth, Devon, for several hours after its 91-year-old driver took a wrong turn at traffic lights.

And apparently it’s not the first time it has happened, with another car driver finding themselves in a similar sticky situation a few years ago.

The latest driving drama was spotted by staff at a nearby Tesco store, which was reportedly used as a landmark for where a left turn should be taken.

Team leader Tony Johnson said: “They told us it was a 91-year-old woman. Her sat nav told her to go left at Tesco so she turned off the road at the pedestrian crossing.”

He said a couple of builders had to make a “quick escape” to avoid the drama – which is reminiscent of a scene from The Italian Job.

Tony added: “It’s not the first time it’s happened. I have worked here for five years and it’s the second time that I’ve seen. A couple of years another car got stuck there – it was exactly the same.”

Nobody is believed to have been injured in the incident, and a spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said it hadn’t been reported as an emergency.

Concrete blocks were reportedly put in front of the front wheels of the car to stop it rolling forward, and the steps were blocked off with temporary metal barriers and lines of plastic cones.

The drama sparked plenty of attention online, with some people referring to a change in the driving test which will require learners to follow sat nav instructions, while others called for the elderly to face a retest to evaluate whether they are still safe to be on the roads.
