THE opening of Greenock’s new gallery dedicated to artist George Wyllie has been recognised at Holyrood.

Jamie Greene MSP lodged a motion marking the recent launch of The Wyllieum – which is housed within the £20 million visitor centre at Greenock Ocean Terminal.

The purpose-built museum’s inaugural exhibition, titled ‘I Once Went Down to the Sea Again’, has brought together the largest selection of Wyllie’s spire sculptures ever shown in a single event.

The show also features previously unseen archival documents, photographs and drawings by the Gourock artist.

In his motion, Mr Greene said it is hoped Wyllie’s ‘important local legacy’ will inspire a new generation of artists in Inverclyde.

The motion has drawn support from almost 30 MSPs, including Inverclyde’s Stuart McMillan and West Scotland representatives Paul O’Kane and Russell Findlay.
