Oprah Winfrey Says 'Color Purple' Musical Will Leave Fans 'Feeling Full' in New Featurette (Exclusive)

'The Color Purple' movie musical starring Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks, releases in theaters Dec. 25

The Color Purple movie musical is just over three months away!

On Friday, Warner Bros. Pictures shared new footage from the movie exclusively with PEOPLE, paired with interviews from the set featuring cast members, director Blitz Bazawule and producer Oprah Winfrey praising the upcoming film.

“There’s nothing that’s been more important or vital to me culturally or artistically than The Color Purple. It is a solid base of spiritual and emotional power for me," Winfrey, 69, says in the clip. "Every woman and man who has been invisible, who has felt unseen and unvalued, this is their story.”

The star earned an Oscar nomination for her performance as Sofia in the original 1985 Steven Spielberg film.

The new footage teases a look at many of the film's lead characters, including Halle Bailey as Nettie, Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, H.E.R. as Squeak, Danielle Brooks as Sofia, Jon Batiste as Grady and Fantasia Barrino as Celie in her feature film debut, among others.

Filmmaker Bazawule, who made his directorial debut with 2018's The Burial of Kojo, notes in the clip that the original movie remains "one of the cornerstones of culture, certainly Black culture."

“It’s a story of finding yourself and living it and going after it, no matter what,” Henson, 53, notes of the film, while H.E.R., 26, adds: “You get to see all these strong women shine and be who they’re truly meant to be.”

An official description for the movie calls the film a "bold new take on the beloved classic" about "the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond."

“As we say in our community, it fills you up so you leave feeling full," Winfrey says in the clip, while Corey Hawkins, who plays Harpo, adds: “I feel so blessed to join The Color Purple family. It’s just an incredible piece of art.”

“It’s how filmmaking should be. Joy, excitement," director Bazawule says in the clip. "Color Purple, let’s go.”

Screenwriter Marcus Gardley wrote The Color Purple's script based on author Alice Walker's 1982 novel of the same name and the musical, which featured a book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. The movie's cast also includes Louis Gossett Jr., David Alan Grier, Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Ciara and Deon Cole, among others.

The Color Purple is in theaters Dec. 25.
