Original Coronation Street cast member Ernst Walder has passed away at the age of 94.

The actor died in September but the sad news has only just come to light in a post on the Corrie blog.

Walder was known for playing Ivan Cheveski, Elsie Tanner's son-in-law, on the cobbles, and it has been reported that he also dated the ITV soap's creator Tony Warren.

Paying tribute on Instagram, former Corrie writer Daran Little said: "Very sad to read of the passing of dearest Ernst Walder.

"An original C St cast member who quickly became Tony Warren's boyfriends (sic) before Tony caught him in bed with another cast member.

"Ernst used to send my sons chocolates every Christmas and was the loveliest man."

Fans have also paid tribute after the sad news emerged.

One tweeted: "Sad to read of the death of Ernst Walder, he played Ivan Cheveski in Coronation Street and was one of the original characters back in 1960. Extremely close to Pat Phoenix, he had so much charisma in those early years. Very sad to read of his passing."

"RIP," said another.

One tweeted: "How sad. He was a great character with Linda Tanner."

Walder was cast as Ivan in Corrie in 1960, which is the year that the much-loved soap started.

He played the character until 1963 before saying goodbye to the cobbles in 1966.
