Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the Orphan Black episode ' Guillotines Decide', which aired in the US last night (July 29).

It's barely been a month since Orphan Black left fans shocked by the death of a beloved character in the form of clone MK, but now the show has done it again and delivered yet another unexpected character demise.

Yes, proving once and for all that this really is the final season and no one is safe, last night's Orphan Black had fans sobbing, as Mrs S was tragically killed by Ferdinand in her efforts to keep Sarah and Felix safe.

The incredible mother figure, played by Maria Doyle Kennedy, was shot in the chest by Ferdinand – but of course she managed to get in a killer blow herself, shooting him right back.

As she breathed her last, we saw her clutching a photo of her foster children and calling them "chickens" one final time.

And according to Kennedy, we weren't the only ones left a blubbering mess.

"I knew that I would possibly cry, but I totally lost [it]," she told TVLine. "I literally just couldn't stop crying. And I looked up and the whole room was crying as well.

"It's kind of unbelievable really, the whole thing. There was a lot of people sobbing on set. But yeah, that's what happened," she added.

"But I managed to take Ferdinand down with me so my death was certainly not in vain."

Kennedy also spoke about what a huge loss Mrs S is to the other Orphan Black characters, saying that it will be "such a disruption to that family", but added that she truly believes she was the only person who could take down Ferdinand.

"[Mrs S] knows, ultimately, that she's the only person who can take [Ferdinand] out," Kennedy added. "They've tried to take him down before, [but] he comes back. It's not gonna be done unless she does it herself.

"[Her death is] such an extraordinary loss for everybody and such a disruption to that family. The challenge is then: Will they be able to rise from that experience and gather the things that she has given them, the coping skills that she has imbued them with, and be able to take them forward and form lives and maintain relationships for themselves?"

That's something we'll have to find out as the show draws to a close – but it seems there's one thing we may never find out.

When asked whether there are any questions Kennedy wishes had been answered about Mrs S, she revealed that the main thing she wanted to know is where on earth she got her money from.

"How did she pay the rent on that great house and always have food and everything?" she said.

"Cause she didn't go out to work, right? She lived a reasonable lifestyle in terms of somebody who never seemed to have a job."

That may be one mystery we never get a real answer for...

Orphan Black airs on BBC America in the US and on Netflix in the UK.
