The Oscars had a memorable ending as Warren Beatty announced the WRONG Best Picture winner.

He announced that La La Land, as most people expected, won Best Picture, but even a while into the winning speeches, confusion reigned and it turned out that, actually, Moonlight had scooped the big prize.

Weirdest. Ending. Ever.

Even if it wasn't for the bizarre ending, Moonlight winning Best Picture was a shock over the hot favourite La La Land, but all anyone can think of was how the mistake happened.

Jimmy Kimmel tried to make light of the mistake: "Personally, I blame Steve Harvey for this."

But fair play to the La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz who said he was "proud" to be handing the award to Moonlight, before Beatty tried to explain how it happened.

"I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, La La Land. That's why I took a long look at Faye [Dunaway]. I wasn't trying to be funny," he outlined, meaning that somehow Beatty was handed the wrong envelope.

So it's worth noting that it definitely wasn't Beatty's fault, but a screw-up by the production team.

M Night Shyamalan took advantage of the mistake to deliver one of the best tweets throughout Oscar night with this gem: "I wrote the ending of the academy awards 2017. @jimmykimmel we really got them!"

And he wasn't the only one to comment on the truly memorable ending to an Oscars that otherwise ran pretty smoothly.

Even Hollywood superstars were perplexed, with Jessica Chastain wondering: "Why didn't the producers of the show rush to the stage when the wrong winner had been announced?! I feel bad for #lalaland producers AWKWARD.

"I'm also very sad for the MOONLIGHT crew. I wish that they had the full experience of winning best pic without the awkwardness of it all."

Former Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres added: "Nothing like live TV. Congrats to Moonlight! And to La La Land for such a gracious reaction."

Then there were the memes. Oh, the memes!

We're still trying to catch our breath.
