‘The Outsiders’, ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ Set More House Records As Broadway Settles Into Summer

Broadway continued settling in to its post-Tonys summer last week, with box office for most shows slipping at least a bit from the previous week and the total roster trimmed to 30 from 32.

In all, receipts for the 30 productions totaled $34,783,390, down about 7% from the previous week (one of the shows no longer on the roster was the heavy-hitter An Enemy of the People). Attendance for the week ending June 30 was 264,578, down about 6% from the previous week. Even with the small decline, a strong 93% of available seats were filled.

Some notable numbers:

  • Merrily We Roll Along once again broke the house record at the Hudson Theatre – the ninth time for those keeping count. With its July 7 closing date fast approaching, the revival grossed $2,321,807 for the week;

  • The Outsiders, which won the Tony for Best Musical, set a house record at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre for the second consecutive week, grossing $1,338,556;

  • Hell’s Kitchen grossed $1,549,472, a drop of $251,416 due to the gifting by the production and TDF of 1,300 tickets to graduating high school seniors in NYC for the Wednesday evening performance;

  • Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club was down a tiny $3,749 to $1,810,907 as the production settled into the second week of its summer schedule: Stars Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin are playing seven performances a week, with alternates filling in for an eighth;

  • Oh, Mary!, the new and much-anticipated Cole Escola comedy, began previews at the Lyceum, selling 96% of seats for the five performances and grossing $420,648; opening night is July 11;

The Tony-winning Appropriate starring Sarah Paulson ended its limited run June 30 on a happy note: Receipts were up $241,111 to $1,167,209.

Also ending their runs were A Beautiful Noise, the Neil Diamond Musical, taking in $1,223,279, a bump of $94,727 from the previous week; and Mary Jane starring Rachel McAdams, slipping $7,081 to $324,007 for seven performances.

Some spring 2024 arrivals that saw noticeable drops were Water For Elephants, down $154,425 to $969,253, with 77% of seats at the Imperial filled, compared to 88% the previous week; Illinoise went from 91% capacity to 86%, receipts dropping $128,348 to $719,154; The Who’s Tommy was down $140,362 to $654,606; the rock opera revival closes July 21.

Shows filling at least 90% of available seats were & Juliet, Aladdin, Appropriate, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, Hadestown (100%), Hamilton (101%), Hell’s Kitchen (101%), Merrily We Roll Along (100%), Moulin Rouge!, Oh, Mary!, Six, Stereophonic (99%), Suffs, The Book of Mormon, The Great Gatsby, The Lion King, The Notebook, The Outsiders (102%), The Wiz and Wicked.

Season to date, Broadway, in the sixth week of the 2024-25 season, has grossed $214,163,099, up 10% over last year at this time, with total attendance of 1,699,848 up 6%.
