The owners of a much-loved pub today insisted it is business as usual despite persistent closure rumours.

The Mons pub has been part of life in Bootle for more than 50 years. Situated on the junction of Southport Road and Breeze Hill, the large pub has stood the test of time and is now part of the Stonehouse Pizza & Carvery brand.

But rumours about its future began to gather pace recently. The pub has reduced its opening hours, meaning it is closed on a Monday and Tuesday. It is also only open for drinks and no longer serves food.

A note on its website says: "Please note, we are currently only open for drinks, Wednesday-Sunday, 12pm-10pm. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause. If you wish to visit on any other day of the week, we would kindly advise you to check one of our other nationwide locations. We look forward to seeing you!"

In recent weeks, the ECHO has received a number of emails from Bootle residents saying The Mons was closing down. One person suggested it was being sold to a developer while another claimed it would become a McDonald's.

Bootle-based Facebook groups have also been full of speculation about the future of The Mons site. A number of posts on social media have asked whether the pub has closed for good or if it will close soon, with commenters putting forward a number of different rumours about what the site could be used for.

The most prominent rumour appears to be the suggestion that the site had been sold to McDonald's and would become a fast food venue.

However, Mitchells & Butlers, which owns the Stonehouse Pizza & Carvery brand, told the ECHO that The Mons is not closing. A spokesperson said that the pub has not been sold to developers and it is business as usual.
