With another strong wind warning in the marine forecast for the Gulf of St. Lawrence, fishers on P.E.I.'s North Shore are going to have to wait until the weekend at the earliest for the opening of the spring lobster season.

On a conference call Thursday morning about a potential opening on Friday for lobster fishing area 24, which runs along the North Shore from East Point to North Cape, Fisheries and Oceans Canada decided on another delay.

The season was originally scheduled to open Monday, but fishers are waiting for lighter winds. Strong winds are a problem on setting day, when boats are weighted with traps.

The forecast for Thursday is for winds from 15 to 20 knots (28-37 km/h) and seas of one to two metres, growing to two to three metres Friday morning.

Lobster season is open in LFA 26A, the eastern half of the Northumberland Strait.

Another conference call is scheduled for Friday at 8 a.m. to discuss a possible opening of the North Shore fishery over the weekend.
