The Paper Cinema's Macbeth: How the company tell the Scottish play with pen and ink

Theatre company The Paper Cinema are bringing their unique brand of storytelling to the Scottish Play - and it’s an intricate business.

A new production of Macbeth opened at Battersea Arts Centre this week, and exclusive images show how the company put the show together.

Beautiful pen and ink illustrations evoke the Bard’s cast of characters and the stormy landscapes of the play, which is also currently in the repertoire of the National Theatre and the RSC.

The illustrations, drawn on cereal packets and pizza boxes, are then used to tell the story. This is captured on camera and projected in front of audiences as a silent film with live orchestral accompaniment.

The Paper Cinema first showed its production of Macbeth at last year’s Edinburgh Festival as part of the British Council Showcase. After a run at Battersea Arts Centre, it will tour the UK.

The company’s critically-acclaimed production of The Odyssey has toured to over 15 countries since 2012.
