‘My party expects me to lose, here's why I'll win’ – Warrington North Tory candidate

THE Conservative parliamentary candidate for Warrington North says ‘my party expects me to lose’ but explained why she is ‘going to win’ in a letter to residents.

The General Election will take place next Thursday, with polling stations open from 7am to 10pm.

The candidates standing in Warrington North are Labour’s Charlotte Nichols, Conservative Yasmin Al-Atroshi, Liberal Democrat David Crowther, Reform UK’s Trevor Nicholls, the Green Party’s Hannah Spencer and independent Maddison Wheeldon.

Ms Al-Atroshi says ‘I am standing up to my party’ by writing the letter.

In the letter to residents, she said: “My name is Yasmin Al-Atroshi, and I am running to be your next Member of Parliament, for the Conservatives.

“I am standing up to my party by writing this letter.

“For too long your Labour MP has taken you for granted and abandoned you – just as my party has done to me. I understand what it feels like to have your voice ignored.

“My party expects me to lose, but here is why I am going to win.

“I have been the underdog my whole life. Coming from a Kurdish background, I have had to overcome cultural barriers to be where I am today. I have a fire in my belly to fight for those who have been forgotten – and Warrington North has been forgotten.

“Here’s what I want to do. I want to be brave enough to stand up to my party when national decisions, like HS2 which negatively impact you.

“I want to use my NHS experience to drive healthcare reform in Warrington North and improve local services.

“I want to establish a new walk-in centre to reduce waiting times. As your MP, I will use every ounce of energy to fight for a desperately needed new hospital. During the COVID pandemic, I worked on the front lines as a foundation pharmacist at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, risking my own life to serve others.

“I want to use my project management experience to reduce prescription waiting times.

“I want a new approach to immigration. Warrington North has been housing migrants in a Holiday Inn for such a long time. But we have done our part, and now we must cap migration and gets flights off to Rwanda. We are an open-minded and incredibly kind country, but we have to be realistic about what we can afford and what numbers of people local communities can assimilate.

“I want to tackle the cost of living which has so much impacted the hardworking people of Warrington North.

“I want to fight for drivers who face LTNs, 20mph roads, ULEZ expansion and possible pay-per-mile road taxes. We can’t afford these stealth taxes on hard-working families who need their cars to drive young children or the elderly to where they need to be.

“I want to change the system surrounding student loan repayments. They are not only unreasonable – they are extortionate.

“I want to help on mortgages as I know your pain. I’m 29 years old and I can’t get on the housing ladder. It isn’t fair and it has to change.

“I want you to know that these issues which worry you also worry me.

“Above all, I want to be honest with you. I know the difficulty of what I’m asking you to do because I know what the last 14 years have been like for so many in Warrington North.

“But as Conservatives our failings aren’t to do with our beliefs – our failings are to do with not being true to those beliefs and not fighting hard enough on behalf of them. Our politicians keep putting themselves ahead of the people we’re meant to serve. That also has to change.

“I promise to fight for you every day. As your MP for Warrington North, I will move to the area permanently – you’ll see me on your weekly shop.”

Ms Al-Atroshi has confirmed that she was in the town centre on June 23, 24 and 25 – and is planning to campaign in the town centre again over the weekend and next week.

In the letter, she added: “Please come and have a meaningful chat about what matters to you and how I can help.

“I know actions speak louder than words, and you are unhappy with the Conservative Party. But we all know that what matters in your MP is individual passion for the job – and I have it.

“Give me the chance to fight for you – and then let’s get to work together.”
