Patton Oswalt has paid tribute to his late wife, Michelle McNamara, as he marks a year since her death.

McNamara died last April, with her cause of death being ruled as a result of taking a combination of prescription medications and having an undiagnosed heart condition, and this week comedian Oswalt has written a beautiful tribute to his wife on Facebook to mark a year since her death, in which he says McNamara "brought me nothing but happiness".

"Last night I took off my wedding ring," he wrote. "I couldn't bear removing it since April 21st, 2016. But now it felt obscene."

He continued: "Removing the ring was removing the last symbol of denial of who I was now, and what my life is, and what my responsibilities are. But it's not fatal."

Patton added that he is not making "any sort of dark ritual or painful memorial" to mark the year, saying that he and their daughter Alice "think of [McNamara] every day".

"She's still so tied into our worlds, in a way that's encouraging, and energizing," he wrote. "So why light a flame that will die, or release a balloon that will disappear?

"Michelle's gone but she wasn't the kind of soul that disappears or dies out."

He concluded the post by saying that losing his wife has been "awful" but not "fatal" and that he never wants to "live badly in this world".

"One year in. Another year starting. It's awful, but it's not fatal," he wrote. "Message received? Over and out."

He also shared photographs of the couple with the post, alongside a box he keeps containing happy memories of his time with his wife.

McNamara was a crime writer who founded True Crime Diary, where she wrote about crime news and cold cases and Oswalt recently told CBS News that he wants to continue with some of her crime-fighting work.

Oswalt is an Emmy and Grammy Award winner and is best known for his roles as Remy in Pixar's Ratatouille, Spencer in sitcom The King of Queens and identical brothers the Koenigs in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
