Paul Scholes targets Manchester United signing who would help the defence

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must sign a "dominant" centre-back to play alongside Harry Maguire, believes Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.

Maguire has enjoyed a largely positive first season with United following his £75million switch from Leicester City, and has been named club captain in his debut campaign.

The England international was totally outdone by Bournemouth's Junior Stanislas on Saturday, however, and Scholes believes his lack of pace has proved problematic at times.

Victor Lindelof is currently first-choice alongside Maguire, while Eric Bailly is also pushing for more minutes - but the Ivory Coast international conceded a penalty second after coming on for Lindelof in the 5-2 win over Bournemouth,

“I really don’t think they are a million miles away," Scholes told BBC Sport.

"I know we spoke about four or five players but I think it’s two or three now.

“Look, I think Lindelof has done alright but I just think Maguire with his lack of pace at times (can get caught).

“If he’s got a really dominant centre-half next to him like a Rio Ferdinand or Jaap Stam who bullies centre forwards, I think that would be a big help to the team.”
