PC Gareth Phillips: Man admits wounding PC who was run over with own police car

Mubashar Hussain admitted causing grievous bodily harm

A man has admitted causing grievous bodily harm to a police officer who was run over by his own car while on duty, resulting in life-changing injuries.

Mubashar Hussain reversed the unmarked vehicle at speed, knocking over and wounding a number of officers before running over PC Gareth Phillips' chest with its front and rear passenger side wheels, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

Hussain, 29, also pleaded guilty to 11 other offences, including two counts of vehicle theft, dangerous driving and assaulting an emergency worker during a brief appearance via video-link at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday.

He was remanded in custody until sentencing in October alongside co-defendant Ahsan Ghafoor, who admitted two counts of car theft, and three other offences including dangerous driving.

PC Phillips, 42, was injured during a traffic stop in the Moseley area of Birmingham on 10 August after his BMW police car was taken.

He was struck by the car and pinned underneath it at one point, West Midlands Police said after it happened.

Hussain, of no fixed address, was arrested in the Sparkbrook area a short time later and was originally charged with attempted murder.

PC Phillips has undergone "significant and complex surgical procedures", Paul Farrow from the CPS said, and could be in hospital for several months.

Prosecutor Andrew Smith QC said updated medical evidence relating to PC Phillips' injuries would be presented at the next court hearing.

Mr Smith added that medical evidence relating to other officers injured by Hussain would also be presented next month.
