A mysterious 'creature' was filmed in the Thames — here are the most common theories about its identity

A recent video of a mysterious "creature" that appeared to be swimming near the O2 Centre in London's River Thames has gone viral after it was uploaded to YouTube, the Evening Standard reports.
People on the internet are now trying to decide if the river creature is a whale, submarine, or even the fabled Loch Ness Monster.
The video was taken from a cable car on the Emirates Air Line, a day before it was uploaded to YouTube by a user named Penn Plate on March 27.
"Something huge was moving under the water and then briefly surfaced," Plate wrote in the description of the video. "Are there whales in the Thames?? Or is it some weird submarine," he added.
Here's a closer look at the "creature," which appears to raise two fins out of the water before ducking back underwater:

While we can't be sure of what the long, shadowy figure in the Thames is (or isn't), the Standard reports that many viewers have left comments on YouTube questioning the nature of the video, which is poorly captured from a vertical angle. Taken just a few days before April 1, the video could have been an early April Fools' joke.
Other viewers believe the supposed river animal to be a group of seals, dolphins, or porpoises; as the Standard points out, a number of sea animals including whales, dolphins, seals, and porpoises have been seen swimming in the Thames since 2000.
A representative from the Natural History Museum told Business Insider that "the video isn't clear enough for identifying purposes."
Though that hasn't stopped social media users from sharing their opinions online.
