People in Istanbul Honk, Wave Flags to Celebrate Election Results

People gathered outside on the streets of Istanbul, Turkey, to wave Turkish flags and drivers honked horns to celebrate the presidential election results on June 24.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan cited “unofficial results” that suggest he won the election. In a speech , Erdogan praised voter turnout saying, "Turkey has given a lesson to the entire world on democracy with a turnout that is close to 90 percent.”

The result would mark another victory for Erdogan in securing a second term as president and a political milestone for Turkey. A controversial new constitution, which was approved last year will take effect on June 24, will transform the role of the president from a ceremonial role as head of state into an executive leader with sweeping powers.
