Person dies in mudslide at Carlton Bank as huge emergency response attends tragic incident

A person has died following a mudslide which saw a huge emergency service response.

North Yorkshire Police, Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team, fire crews and ambulance paramedics headed to Carlton Bank on Wednesday afternoon following a tragic incident. Police confirmed the incident took place at around 1.15pm and a cordon was erected at the scene.

It is understood nobody else was injured and officers are investigating the incident. A spokesperson said: "We are currently responding to a mudslide at Carlton-in-Cleveland. We can confirm that one person has sadly died as a result of the incident. Our thoughts are with their family and friends during this difficult time."

The force confirmed the following:

The incident occurred at approximately 1.15pm on Wednesday 22 May. One person has sadly died. No one else was injured. Emergency services are at the scene and managing the situation. The area is cordoned off while we respond to the incident.

Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team volunteers also confirmed their attendance. They said they were called by the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) to a report of a mudslide near to Carlton Bank. A very short time later they were also contacted by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service with a similar report.

Nineteen Cleveland MRT members were deployed, eventually rising to thirty at the scene during the course of the afternoon and working alongside emergency service colleagues including the North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, as well as the ambulance services.

In a statement they said: "North Yorkshire Police have since confirmed that one person sadly died as a result of the incident. The thoughts of the mountain rescue volunteers are with the family and friends of the deceased during such a very sad time."

The incident comes just days after a woman died after collapsing on the Cleveland Way. A large emergency response, including Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team, attended Carlton Bank on Saturday afternoon, May 18. Yorkshire Ambulance Service, North Yorkshire Police and the air ambulance had all attended.

A force spokesperson said: "We are actively gathering information and will provide further updates as soon as we can. We would ask the public to refrain from speculation and spreading unverified information.

"Please monitor our official channels for updates. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding."
