Peter Andre has set the record straight about why he ended up in therapy after a news article said he had a breakdown "triggered by 'casual sex and shirtless posing'".

The Mysterious Girl singer took to Instagram to clear things up, saying that the press were usually "very kind" to him but that he wanted to clarify the real reason that he sought treatment.

He shared a screengrab from The Times telling his story, alongside a snap of another article on the subject.

The first story read: "At the height of his fame, at 25, he had a nervous breakdown. It began with brain fog, then panic attacks, depression, anxiety, agoraphobia, even vertigo. He puts it down to the legacy of childhood bullying: all the fear he'd felt as a boy was finally catching up with him. Unable to function, he went home to his family in Australia, then into hiding in the US."

The story said that the singer went on to six years of medication, therapy and psychiatric units.

The second screengrab showed an article with the headline: "Peter Andre had a nervous breakdown triggered by 'casual sex and shirtless posing'."

Andre told his fans: "Page one is what was actually said in the @thetimes about why I ended up in therapy and medication.

"Page 2 is how others interpreted what was said.

"I understand the industry and am fully aware that not all things written are represented exactly the same.

"I’m also aware that the press are very kind to me in general, but I just wanted anyone reading to know the real reason."
