An online petition calling for the Three Girls health worker to be honoured has reached over 130,000 signatures.

BBC One's three-part drama series told the story of the real-life Rochdale abuse case from the perspective of the underage girls who were groomed and sexually exploited by a ring of adult men – a case that would rock the country when it was exposed back in 2012.

The new petition is calling for Sara Rowbotham to be recognised for her services in collecting evidence involving the Rochdale grooming gangs.

"This evidence along with the brave survivors of the abuse own statements was dismissed time & time again by GMP & CPC," the petition reads.

"Years later some of the men were jailed because of this evidence, without a doubt without Sara & her team this prosecution would never [have] happened."

The petition – which also recalls how Sara was removed from her role and later made redundant – continues: "The very lady who believed these children, supported these children, never once dismissing these children or gave up on these children was tossed aside!"

Three Girls has been praised for its gripping portrayal of the Rochdale scandal. Among the cast were Lesley Sharp (Clocking Off), Maxine Peake (Dinnerladies), Jill Halfpenny (Coronation Street), Paul Kaye (Game of Thrones) and a group of talented young actresses.
