Yahoo News The Phantom of the Open trailer promises the golf version of Eddie the Eagle
If you're in the mood for an uplifting sports underdog tale, it looks like The Phantom of the Open is just the movie for you.
Ahead of its world premiere at the London Film Festival next month, the first trailer has been released and it's giving us Eddie the Eagle vibes, only with golf. Given our love for that movie, it's only a good thing.
The movie is based on the incredible true story of Maurice Flitcroft, a crane operator and optimistic dreamer from Barrow-in-Furness. With the support of his family and friends, Maurice gained entry to the 1976 British Open qualifying despite never playing a round of golf before.
Unsurprisingly, he delivered a record-worst score and was banned for life, yet that didn't stop him pulling off a series of stunning and hilarious attempts to compete at the highest level of professional golf, becoming a British folk hero in the process.
The Phantom of the Open is based on the book of the same name by Simon Farnaby and Scott Murray, with Farnaby (who co-wrote Paddington 2) adapting his own book for the big screen.
Directed by Craig Roberts, it stars Mark Rylance as Maurice Flitcroft, Sally Hawkins as his wife Jean and Rhys Ifans as his nemesis Mackenzie. The cast is rounded out by Jake Davies, Christian Lees, Jonah Lees, Mark Lewis Jones and Johann Myers.
Back in July, it was confirmed that Farnaby had returned to the Paddington series to write the story for the third movie alongside Paul King and Mark Burton, with the script written by Burton, Jon Foster and James Lamont.
King won't be back to direct Paddington 3, but the movie is finally set to start shooting in spring 2021.
The Phantom of the Open is released in UK cinemas on November 5, following its world premiere at the London Film Festival.
