Pope Benedict XVI holds last audience in St Peter's Square to say goodbye

Thousands gathered at St Peter's Square in the Vatican to pay their respects and bid farewell to the outgoing Pope. Carrying flags, banners and balloons the crowd was greeted by Benedict XVI in his "Popemobile" for his final general audience. The Pope formally steps down on February 28 and will no longer hold the title at 7pm GMT. General audiences are normally held inside during the winter but due to the level of interest, it was moved outside to accommodate 200,000 pilgrims expected to attend.
