In pictures: The 10 most dangerous places to drive in Britain

The West Midlands has been named as the most dangerous area to drive in Britain.

It topped a list of the UK’s most hazardous areas for driving, ahead of Thames Valley, West Yorkshire and Kent.

Using government figures on car accidents from 2011 to 2015, towbar specialists Witter identified the most dangerous places in Britain’s road network.

The company examined the number of casualties caused by road accidents in each police force area across the UK.

West Midlands came out as the riskiest area because of its 37,153 casualties across the five-year period.

At the other end of the scale, Dumfries and Galloway was named the safest area to drive in Britain, followed by the City of London – the only entry in the top ten that isn’t in Scotland.

The study also identified 30mph zones as the most dangerous speed limit areas, probably because there are more of them than any other.

Britain’s motorways, where the speed limit is 70mph, account for just 7% of road accidents, researchers said.

Thursday and Saturday were the most dangerous days for driving, making up 32% of road accidents.
