It's all over: Dejected England fans left heartbroken after World Cup defeat

England is waking up to an almighty hangover after Gareth Southgate and his squad crashed out of the World Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.

The country came to a standstill during the crucial match as the Three Lions lined-up against Croatia looking to keep the dream of bringing football home alive.

Kieran Trippier’s early free-kick put England on course for their first final since 1966, but Southgate’s men will not be able to replicate Sir Alf Ramsey’s heroes after Croatia staged a fightback to instead face France this weekend.

England players were quick to share their pain on social media with fans after the defeat, with captain Harry Kane telling his two million followers: ‘It hurts a lot. It will hurt for a while. We can be proud and we’ll be back. Thanks for all your support.’

England fans were crushed last night, crushed this morning, and will be crushed for some time yet.

Here’s how the country reacted to the loss.
