Piers Morgan teases Ryan Gosling over response to Barbie Oscar snubs
The actor has expressed disappointment over his co-star Margot Robbie being snubbed
Piers Morgan has teased that Barbie's Ryan Gosling could turn down his own Oscar nomination after the actor expressed disappointment over his co-star Margot Robbie failing to get a nod.
This year's Academy Awards nominations were revealed this week, and while Barbie scooped a total of eight, including a best supporting actor nomination for Gosling, Robbie missed out in the best actress category and filmmaker Greta Gerwig wasn't recognised with a directing nod.
The decision has sparked outrage among fans, with many claiming that nominating Gosling (Ken) and not Robbie (Barbie) smacked of sexism. Gosling has also spoken out, saying in a statement: "To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement."
However, writing in The Sun, Morgan quipped that Gosling could do a bit more.
"Of course, he could have made a much bigger statement of solidarity to his fallen colleagues by saying he wasn’t going to accept his nomination and wouldn’t be attending the Oscars," he said. "Ken definitely would have done that because the spineless twerp would have been too terrified of Barbie’s vengeful wrath not to!"
"But Ryan’s made of tougher stuff and his outrage for his female co-stars doesn’t quite extend to giving up his own chance of winning an Oscar," said Morgan, adding: "And nor should it."
Morgan has made no secret of the fact he wasn't a fan of Barbie, slating it in a review last summer. "The movie’s clear message is that the only solution to this dreadful patriarchal state of affairs is for women to rule the world, and preferably do so on their own without horrible men to ruin both the planet and them," he said, insisting it was a "ridiculously misandrist message" that was "being rammed down the throats of literally tens of millions of people".
He doubled down on his opinion in his latest column, but said that Gosling gave "by far the best acting performance" in what was an "otherwise utterly atrocious film".
Barbie has scooped a total of eight Oscar nominations, including best adapted screenplay and the coveted best picture gong. The film's America Ferrera was nominated for best supporting actress.
The Ugly Betty star has also been among those to admit to being upset that Robbie and Gerwig were passed over, telling the Today show it was a "disappointment".
