Piers Morgan has joked that he was “relieved” to see his Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid had covered up after she faced a backlash over a cleavage-baring dress.

Reid caused a stir when she appeared on the ITV programme in a rather revealing green silk dress, with some viewers calling it “inappropriate” and others suggesting it was distracting. One even said Reid looked ready for “a night on the tiles” in the plunging frock.

However, the TV star looked decidedly more conservative on Thursday’s show, in a blue outfit with a much higher neckline.

Morgan could not resist some light-hearted teasing as he read out some comments viewers had made about the dress.

“I hadn’t really noticed because obviously I don’t objectify you in the workplace,” said the presenter, chuckling as he noted that some people who tuned in had thought Reid’s dress was a bit too much for a morning show.

However, Reid wasn’t taking it lying down and snapped straight back: “Yes, women shouldn’t have boobs at breakfast!”

Barely able to control his giggles, Morgan went on: “I’m very relieved, I must say, on behalf of the nation, that you’ve decided to put them away today because we can’t cope with that kind of heat at 6:43 in the morning.”

Reid also addressed all the fuss on Instagram, sharing a picture of a headline about her outfit and writing: “SHOCKER! Woman has cleavage.

“Realised it is STILL before watershed so here’s a nice covered up version. Yesterday’s green dress.”

Reid wore the controversial dress earlier this week and there was quite a mixed reaction on social media.

Although some viewers were critical, others did say she looked amazing and was entitled to wear what she wanted.

One person tweeted: “That’s not really ok to tell anyone what they can and can’t wear. The public are objectifying her and it’s wrong, you wear what you want everyone can wear what you want, hell let’s see Piers in a dress and Susanna can wear the suit cover the her up fully.”

“Just want to say I loved your dress yesterday morning, it was lovely a nice breath of fresh air after all this horrendous lockdown xxxxx,” said another.
